A View of ROTA from the Secretariat
by
Sharon Cyr, Division Manager, RI
Programs
|
|

When working to
support Rotary clubs around the world, one of
our biggest challenges is making sure we know
what is happening out there. What types
of projects are Rotary clubs doing well? What
resources would assist clubs with their service
projects? While staff in Evanston always look
for ways to get success stories from Rotarians
in the field, this is often a challenge. Since
2007, one of the greatest benefits we have seen
from Reach Out to Africa Committees is the
collection of success stories and resource
needs from Rotary clubs in Africa. Through
these efforts, we can better assist Rotarians
in addressing the gap between interest and
action.
This special
focus on membership and service on the African
continent helps us connect people, establish
relationships between Rotarians in different
parts of the world, and highlights resource
needs. If you have any ideas or success stories
that you would like to share with us, please
write to programs@rotary.org
and help us support ROTA. Also remember to
submit stories for the ROTA newsletter to ROTA
Chairman Tom Branum.

Matching Grant to
Malawi
Reduces Malaria
Cases
|
|
During the 2008-2009
Rotary year, 20 clubs and Rotarians in Rotary
District 6040 (Missouri, USA) implemented a
District Matching Grant project to supply 37
villages in Malawi with anti-malarial bed nets
and related services. According to recent
results reported by Malawi Childrens Village,
the project has reduced the incidence of
malaria in those villages by 65-70%.
The total costs
were $14,000 USD for two years of malaria
prevention efforts. Data for each village
was reported on a monthly basis to Malawi
Children’s Village by an assigned volunteer
coordinator and educator, who also conducts
follow-up visits.
Baseline data
was collected before the initiation of the
project and compared with Malawi government
projections. Pre-project case rates for
children under five without bed nets ranged
from 29% to 37%. By December of 2009, the
case rate for malaria in the 37 villages had
dropped to 4.2%.

Baby
Incubators from India to Disrict 9200 |
|
Nyakahanga
is a designated Hospital in Karagwe
District. It is recognized as a Referral
Hospital since it serves the entire District
with a population of more than 600,000
people. Not only its inhabitants, but also
people from the neighbouring countries as
Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi more even from
neighbourhood districts in Kagera Region.
The
picture shows four premature babies in the
Incubator. Sometimes it may need only one or
two babies who are supposed to be
placed in the Incubator. Yet, since there
are many babies who are born prematurely, the
demand is still on place for consideration
bearing in mind the population mentioned
above”.
The
Rotary Club of Karagwe, Tanzania (D-9200)
conveys appreciation to Reach Out to Africa
committee for this valuable
donation.

Heart
Surgeries in India for African Children
|

Rotary Gift
of Life project in India is classic example
how Rotary can promote goodwill and
understanding between nations. Recently,
under this program, 25 children from Africa
underwent successful open heart surgery in
Delhi hospitals.
The first child
to reach Delhi was 16 year old Kabuuka Emmauel,
a native of Agola in Kawempe Division,
Kampala District, Uganda for valve
replacement. Kabuuka’s surgery was a
challenging one because many hospitals abroad
refused to undertake this surgery due to high
risk involved. He finished his primary seven
(PLE ) exams last year with support of
philanthropists. Since he was a bright student,
his school wanted him to study further after
the surgery. He was presented to their local TV
stations to raise the cost of air tickets from
Uganda to India. A company came forward
to sponsor the cost of tickets. He returned
happily to his native place last year with
smiling faces.
This was
followed by 18 months old Harriet
Nantume, 9 year old Apophia
Natukunda, 12 year old Scovia Amoding and 15
year old Okanyakure Petter Pius (for double
valve replacement). After getting new
lease of life, Pius celebrated his 16th
birthday at hospital.
A Rotary
Foundation matching grant helped to arrange
surgery of another 20 children from Uganda,
Sudan and Kenya in Delhi hospitals recently.
Rotarian families assisted as hosts and
interpreters who also brought warmth and
comfort to escorts while extending motherly
care to children.

SECOND
CLUB IS CHARTERED IN ANGOLA An
Historic Event |

DG Shân
Biesman-Simons writes: “For any District
Governor the chartering of a new club is a
highlight, particularly when it is in a
country that only had one club. On the 26th
October 2010 Luanda Sul Rotary Club was
admitted to membership of Rotary International.
Before Angola gained its independence on 11
November 1975, there were six Rotary clubs. The
Rotary Club of Luanda was the only club to
survive the turbulent transition period. The
Rotary Club of Luanda is the sponsor club of
Luanda Sul. The occasion of the charter was
celebrated at a gala event at the Tatalona
Convention Hotel on the 22nd November. Décor,
food and fellowship were outstanding.There
was extensive media coverage. President
Isabelle Bamba-Crattaz and her fellow Rotarians
warmly welcomed visiting Rotarians, honoured
guests and the press.
There were
numerous celebratory speeches with an emphasis
on the need for Rotarians to assist our global
partners eradicate polio, acknowledging the
severity of the recent outbreak in Angola.
Luanda Sul
chartered with twenty members. The club is
already involved with a number of projects in
the community. We are confident that this club
will have a long and successful future Building
Communities Bridging Continents. It is expected
that he Rotary Club of Lobito will soon be
chartered.

Restoring
Eyesight in Swaziland Rotarians
in Wales work with African
country |
The RC of
Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr learned that
Swaziland, where cataracts are endemic, had a
population of 1.3 million, but only one eye
surgeon – Dr Jono Pons!
The club decided
to help Jono by funding essential equipment to
restore sight. Over £2,000 was raised and
matched by District 1180 and the Rotary
Foundation. In all, around £10,000 resulted,
and the equipment was supplied via RC of
Malkerns Valley.
Together with RC
of Mid-Wirral, a caravan, outfitted as a
mobile out-patient clinic, was provided and a
Liverpool University surgeon was sponsored to
demonstrate the latest developments. Further
equipment needed by Dr. Pons has since been
shipped.

Australia
Group on a Rotary Project Safari
D9790
- D9320
|
|

In
early November a team of seven Rotarians, with
five spouses, traveled from D9790 in South
East Australia to D9320 in Central Southern
Africa on what had been planned initially as a
Rotary Friendship Exchange, but which developed
into the first Rotary
Project Safari as proposed by RI President Ray
Klinginsmith. Representative
of seven clubs in their District, the team*
visited as many clubs in D9320 (Potchefstroom,
Klerksdorp, Kimberley South, Kimberley,
Welkom, Ficksburg, Bloemfontein-Raadzaal),
spending two to three nights with each
club.
The
team was home-hosted throughout, had time for
sight-seeing at each stop and, of course,
hosts took the opportunity to show the
Australian guests some of their projects.
The
Australian team were wonderful guests, and all
hosts thoroughly enjoyed
their visit.

The
Australian Rotarians having expressed their
interest in the projects which they saw, it is
now hoped that this first Safari visit will
lead to support for programmes being undertaken
in D9320.

PRID
Örsçelik
Balkan,
Vice-Chair |
Hello Fellow Rotarians,
Recently,
I attended the Hannover Zone Institute of
Continental Europe & RIBI, and the
Sofia Zone Institute of Zone 20B.
Chairman of our Regional Subcommittee –
Northern Africa, PDG Mohamed Delawar, made a
presentation of ROTA in the Zone 20-B
Institute. Intercountry Committee Chair PDG
Tony Polsterer urged the European Rotarians to
focus on humanitarian projects in Africa
through ICC. In both Institutes, numerous
Rotarians appealed to me expressing their
enthusiasm to launch projects in Africa. I
advise you to be pro-active on disseminating
your need assessments to European Rotary Clubs,
offering collaboration. Don’t hesitate to
contact me if you need help on this
opportunity. Please note that “WORLD
UNDERSTANDING AND PEACE FORUM” will convene in
SHERM EL SEIKH, EGYPT, DURING 24 – 26 FEBRUARY
2011. President Ray Klinginsmith and numerous
Rotary Senior Leaders will attend this
important gathering of our Rotary with big
number of participants from many parts of
the world. Mrs. Nagwa Shoeb, the
General Director of The Suzanne Mubarek
Women’s International Peace Movement, assured
us that First Lady Mubarek will attend
this meeting to address at the Opening Plenary
Session. We are informed that she plans to be
with us, as observer, at another session and
join us at the peace park walk and dinner.
There will be a presentation and workshop on
ROTA at his FORUM also. I urge you to attend
this meeting and build awareness on the
humanitarian needs that Africa suffers from, as
well as the project needs to address these
problems.
Best
regards
ROTA Vice-Chair

Nearly half way
through the year as chairman, I find myself growing
ever more proud of Rotary; every week receiving more
stories of compassionate endeavors
aimed at Building Communities and Bridging

I hope that you share

If so, perhaps this would be a good time to
pass your good fortune on by
inviting a well qualified friend to join your
club.
