ROTA Committee Newsletter

Issue Number 9

April 2011
Dear Orscelik,

A rapid rate of membership
growth for ROTARY has been projected for Africa. Rotary International President
Ray Klinginsmith has said that Africa can soon have enough members to have
its own RI Board member.  At the present time, Africa alternates with
Europe to select a Director who serves on the Board. President Ray also
believes that a significant increase in Rotary membership on the African
continent will increase the possibility to hold a Rotary International
Convention in a major African city.

Reach Out To Africa (ROTA)
Executive Committee members in each of the four regions of Africa will
assist RI Director Sam Owori, the District Governors, and the Rotary Coordinators
as they relate the target of 35,000 members by the year 2018. Each Region
has established percentage growth goals, which will be communicated to
clubs by elected officers.

Bring a friend to your club
meeting.  You will be doing the friend a big favor.

Like many of you, my passion
is to energize our Rotary to march at the forefront as the leading service
organization of the World. I have full belief that … we have all the
assets to do it and to avoid outdating of our Organization.

Rotary in Africa will grow
5-6 % every year and embrace more than 35,000 members by 2017.  I
also believe that Rotary will grow in coherence with numbers and quality.
It will overcome its drawbacks on diversity, which source out from the
mindset still locked on the outdated values of some of its members. I look
forward to an ambiance where issues like wrong perceptions on race, religion
and gender are not debated anymore. In this context, I expect to see a
woman President of Rotary International before 2020.

I believe that Rotary will
keep on being admired by its successful services on “Building the
Communities and Bridging the Continents.”

USAIDS Thrust
on the HIV/AIDS Pandemic
USAIDS
The 2011-2015 UNAIDS Strategy
focuses on ways to

  • Revolutionise HIV prevention
and accelerate the treatment, care and support.
  • Advance human rights and
    gender equality.

The
2010 Global AIDS epidemic report states:

  • 33.3 million living with
HIV vs. 28.6 million in 2001. Sub Saharan Africa has the largest number
but it is 68% of the total vs. 71% before.
  • The number of new HIV
infections is 2.6 million vs. 3.1 million. More than 7,000 people are infected
daily. The rate is increasing in North America, East Asia and the Middle
    East.
  • The adult prevalence at 0.8%
is unchanged  While increasing in North America, Eastern Europe, East
Asia, the Middle East and Oceania, the prevalence in these regions is much
    lower.
  • The number of annual AIDS-related
deaths is significantly increasing in Eastern Europe.

Initiative
of Eliminating Sources of Illiteracy in Beni-Sweif Governorate

LiteracyThe
project is being  implemented by Rotary Club of El-Tahrir, according
to the Memorandum of Understanding, signed with his Excellency Governor
of Beni-Sweif and mainly  supported by El-Tahrir Rotary Club through
effective partnership with Beni-Sweif Muddiriya of Education (MOE), the
Beni-Sweif Branch of Professional Academy for Teachers (PAT) together with
the Orman Foundation.

The project duration is three
years and 10 primary schools from Nasser Educational Directorate have been
selected for project pilot in year one.  74 teachers from five primary
schools have been trained in the Concentrated  Language Encounter
(CLE) methodology.  5020 primary students have been pre- tested, and
3559 out of them  have been taught in very interactive 79 CLE
classes during the first term of year 2010/2011.

During the second term of
the academic year 2010/2011, 5 more schools are being targeted where 41
teachers have received the  CLE Training  and they have already
started teaching 2166 students in CLE classes.

The
Last Word
Tom & Nyah Best

My dear wife, Linda, says
that I am always wanting to say the last word whenever we have a difference
of opinion. This section of the ROTA newsletter is probably another example
of that tendency of mine.

I just wanted to ask for your feedback by email about what you would like
to see in a version of this newsletter. Your suggestions are important
to us. Your contribution of short stories to put into future editions is
also requested.

I hope you enjoy this first attempt to make the newsletter accessible to
more readers.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Past RI Director Thomas Branum,
Sr.

ROTA Chairman
