Rotary in Africa:
Service Opportunities.

Issue Number 17
18 December 2011

Dear Orscelik,

The First Word
Tom & Nyah Best

My Dear Friends,
This edition re-states some goals and offers several new partnership opportunities to be of service in water and sanitation projects. Also see the list of Humanitarian Grant requests from the West Africa Projects Fair held at Dakar, Senegal recently. Look carefully to see whether any of them would be of interest to your club or district.
As we approach the Christmas Season for my family, the age-old phrase “peace on earth, goodwill to men” is my prayer for the world.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Past RI Director Thomas Branum, Sr.

ROTA Chairman

PS. District Governors and other recipients are asked to please share this edition with others on your mailing list.

Apply for packaged global grant with Aga Khan University

Applications are available online for packaged global grants with Aga Khan University.

Through the packaged grants, Rotarian-led vocational training teams will work with Aga Khan University faculty to design and provide training programs that will enhance the professional development of university-level nursing faculty in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The teams will also work with area Rotarians and Aga Khan University to implement a service project that connects the training to clinics or health care programs. Up to three grants will be awarded annually.

Packaged grants also fund scholarships for students to study nursing and midwifery through Aga Khan University’s nursing programs in East Africa.

A Future Multi-million Dollar Project in Uganda?
WASRAG logo

Uganda Rotary Water Plus (URWP)
Under discussion by the WASRAG group is a program to assist the Government of Uganda (GoU) help local villages and rural communities achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of 77% access to safe water and sanitation service by 2015.
Sustainability of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) service is the over-riding goal of the program. The communities will be the focus of the program. It will be designed and executed around their commitment and ownership so that they are enabled to maintain and sustain the service, and use it as a base for continuous self-improvement and economic growth, beyond 2015.

Might this concept be of interest in other African countries?
